Volunteering in the Community

Bliley employees Pat Correll and Rob Hagan participated in the Richmond YWCA's 2009 Volunteer Day.

Pat and Rob were asked to clip local newspaper articles about domestic abuse and violence against women & children. The clipped articles are a part of an outreach teaching tool that helps families who have experienced domestic violence.

David Nelson, Advanced Planning counselor at Bliley's, has kept his musical light under a bushel … until recently.

As the tenor saxophone player with King William County's Rehoboth Baptist Fellowship choir, David and other choir members, musicians, and ministers entertained residents of two Richmond area homes for the elderly this holiday season. They recently performed at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged in Richmond and at The Atlantic at Charter Colony in Midlothian.

These photos of David (on the right with the musicians) and the choir were taken during one of the programs which marked the first time the choir and musicians had performed outside the church.

St. Joseph’s Home

Frank Wayne, a member of Bliley’s funeral service staff, volunteers at St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly. In this photo, he’s showing off his cooking skills, as staff and volunteers prepare frozen meals which will be sold at the home’s upcoming Family Festival.

Frank’s family has had an association with St. Joseph’s Home since 1912. Operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor, and located in Henrico County, the home has provided quality living for the elderly in Richmond since 1874.

Walk to Cure Diabetes

Bliley funeral director Carey Barnett participated in the 2009 Walk to Cure Diabetes at Byrd Park’s Dogwood Dell on Sunday, September 20.    She joined 2500 others in this annual fundraiser which was sponsored by the Virginia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Carey, whose role as switchboard operator makes hers one of the first voices you hear when you call Bliley’s, has a personal investment in finding the cure.  When her brother was 20 years old he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.  Carey’s sister-in-law subsequently spearheaded family participation in the walk and the rest is history.

Congratulations to Carey and her family and all those who participated in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. For more information about diabetes and upcoming events see:  www.jdrf.org/centralvirginia

BE PREPARED

No, Jim Dickerson the manager of our Augusta Chapel wasn’t making a pitch for the Boy Scouts. On Thursday August 6th the Primetimers Senior Luncheon of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Glen Allen, VA asked him to come and speak with them about pre-planning a funeral. From the numerous questions after the presentation it was obvious that folks took notice of the topic and were giving some serious consideration to prior preparation. The Primetimers (more info) is a program offering a diverse range of topics followed by lunch. It is open to the public the first Thursday of each month.

Some of Jim’s guests were Hilda and Sam Purviance and their son Sam Jr. of Wakefield, VA. Sam and Hilda are former owners of the Purviance Funeral Home where Jim started in the funeral business as an apprentice in 1966. In addition Jim was joined by Rev. Wayne Varner and his wife Violet. Wayne frequently officiates at services for families at Bliley's.
