O'Brien, Walter J. III, known as "Joe," died May 10, 2013 at his home. Joe was 46 years old. He was born in London, England lived there; Frankfurt, Germany, Chicago, Ill., New York City, N.Y. and Richmond, Va. Joe is survived by a handsome son, Connor; a pretty daughter, Caitlin; and his beautiful wife, Debra. In addition, Joe leaves loving relatives and friends across the USA and abroad. In his all too short life, he was fortunate to have two "moms," Nancy Malmuth and Margaret O'Brien and a devoted father Walter J. O'Brien, Jr. He graduated from Hotchkiss, a prep school in Lakeville, Conn. He earned a degree in economics from the University of Richmond in 1989. He began his successful financial career at Smith Barney, in New York City. When he left New York to join Scott & Stringfellow, he was a senior vice president at Citicorp. More recently, he was senior managing director for Capital Markets at BB&T. Joe was well known for his inspirational leadership, innovative thinking and financial acumen. In Joe's adult life, he contributed to each community where he lived. In New York City, that included, the Metropolitan Opera Assoc., the American Reading Council and the American Assoc. for the Royal Academy of the Arts. In Richmond, he was on the advisory committee of the Sacred Heart Center, at the University of Richmond's Robins School of Business, he was on the executive advisory council, and mentored undergraduate and graduate students. His family will receive friends 6-8pm Friday, May 17, at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., where a Prayer Service will be held 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd., followed by a reception in the Commons at the church. Interment will take place 2 p.m. Saturday at Hollywood Cemetery. No flowers please. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in Joe's name. Online condolences at blileys.com.
